Mulch, Aggregates, and Delivery

1. How much does 1 cubic yard of mulch cover?
It is estimated that one cubic yard of mulch will cover approximately 160 square feet at 2" deep.

2.  What is "Designer Mulch?"
Our designer mulches are simply pallets that have been ground up and dyed. The dye ensures that the color will last longer than your traditional mulch as long as it is cared for properly.

3.  What is the coverage rate for the bulk stones, such as 57 stone, river rock, and brick chips?
1 ton of the bulk stones will cover approximately 100 square feet at 2" deep. At the Kernersville, NC location, bulk stones are sold by the 1/2 yard scoop, which is approximately 1100-1300 lbs (a little over 1/2 ton).

4.  Do you deliver?
Both locations offer dump truck delivery as well as flatbed delivery.  There is a 4 scoop minimum for delivery with dump trucks in Kernersville, NC, and a 5 yard minimum or $100 product order for dump trucks in Rocky Mount, VA.  There is not a minimum for flatbed delivery, in which a forklift is attached to unload product.
For current delivery rates, please contact the store nearest you.

Natural Stone

1.  What does 1 ton of stone yield?
1 ton of stone yields different amounts depending on the stone and application.
-A thinstone or flagstone that is 1"-2" thick will yield approximately 120 square feet when laid (such as for a patio).
-1 ton of our "Garden Path" Flagstone that is 2"-4" thick will yield 60-70 square feet.
-For a drystack wall application, 1 ton of thinstone will yield 14-18 linear feet for a 1'x 1' wall.
-Building Stone is 4"-6" thick and 1 ton yields 35-45 square feet.

2.  How do I know what stone I should use for my project?
Thinstone is primarily used for drystack walls and as a stone veneer.  Flagstone is primarily used for walkways, patios, and as stepping stones.  Fieldstone and Building stone can be used in various wall applications.  Wall stone is primarily used in wall applications.

3.  What can I use for a free standing wall?
Versa-Lok Weathered Parapet Wall blocks are made primarily for free standing walls.  Designed for use in free standing walls, seat walls and patio enclosures, Weathered Parapet displays it's unique weathered texture on both sides of the wall. Create beautiful garden walls, up to three feet, for amazing landscapes. No mortar is required in installation and Weathered Parapet provides the same beauty and strength as other Versa-Lok units. Weathered Parapet Wall is available in both standard and cobble sizes and in a variety of colors.

4.  What is a segmental retaining wall (SRW)?
Segmental Retaining Walls (SRWs) are dry-stacked, mortar-less walls made of 100%, low-absorption, high-strength concrete units. SRWs are more economical and easier to install than poured-in-place concrete or traditional masonry walls. Their rugged, rock-solid durability enables them to outlast railroad ties and timbers while remaining environmentally safe.

5.  How high can my wall be when using Versa-Lok Products?
When using Versa-Lok wall systems, your walls can be a maximum of 4 feet WITHOUT using Geogrid or up to over 50 feet WITH Geogrid.  Keep in mind that walls over 4 feet require engineering by a professional.

6.  What is Geogrid?
Typically made of HDPE or polyester, geogrids (e.g. Mirafi 2XT) are open-celled, directional fabrics that are placed between the layers of block at different intervals to stabilize the soil behind the retaining wall and secure the wall face to the earth being retained. Geogrids are laid out perpendicular to the wall face within the compacted soil behind the wall. The height of the wall being constructed, soil characteristics, and the pressure on the wall caused by the slopes, structures, and/or paved areas all affect the proper placement of geogrid.

7.  Can I install a tiered wall?
Yes!  We recommend that the second wall is located directly behind the first wall at a distance of at least 2 times higher than the first wall.

8.  Should I have an engineer assist in designing my retaining wall?
Yes, if the wall will be more than 4' in height. A professional engineer can provide you with the necessary (local code) requirements, provide design planning to achieve the look you desire, and give you peace of mind that the job will be done correctly.

9.  What kind of walls can I build using Versa-Lok Products?
Versa-Lok offers walls that can be straight, curved, include 90 degree corners, include steps, etc!  Please refer to our design and installation guides for more information!

Pavers

1.  Is it possible to lay pavers over an existing concrete walkway that is in good shape?
Even though we do not recommend doing so, it is possible. There are two major things to consider: First, this will raise the project site by about 2" to 3". Second, the contraction that can result in the concrete slab in colder weather will, in the same way, affect the pavers. Therefore, you must also take into consideration doorways or other areas that may be affected.

2.  Can I use pavers for my pool deck?
Using pavers will not only provide a beautiful pool deck, it will create a safer surface that prevents slipping. In addition, pavers provide a cooler walking area and can handle moisture better than concrete surfaces.

3.  Is it possible for weeds to grow between my pavers?
We recommend using our Polymeric Sand to prevent weeds from growing between pavers.

4.  How much modified stone base material and sand should be used in installing walkways, patios, and/or driveways?
We recommend a minimum of 4" to 8" stone base for patios and 12" for driveways, while the setting bed should be at least 1" thick.

5.  What is the difference between pavers and stamped or patterned concrete?
Stamped or patterned concrete are merely slabs of concrete with a design and/or pattern. These are prone to problems of deterioration and fracturing, especially in freeze/thaw environments.

6.  What are interlocking pavers?
It is not the shape that makes pavers "interlocking," it is the system in which they are laid. When properly installed, the combination of the paving stones, bedding sand, joint sand, and edge restraint allows pavers to interlock.

7.  What is the whitish residue I have noticed on my pavers?
This residue is often referred to as efflorescence, and is both normal and common in concrete and clay brick products. This phenomenon is caused by the natural salt minerals present in the materials used in the production; it is not a product defect nor is it harmful to the pavers. The residue will actually fade away with time (within 6 months to a year). We recommend using Techni-Seal’s Efflorescence Cleaner, which can also be used as a multi-purpose cleaner.
